I ran this by another mailing list for SUSE desktop and this is what they came back with (read thread below). Have you seen this before?
The applet does not appear to support transparency. There's something
specific you need to do as a tray icon (and maybe an applet) to support
Search for "Transparent", and you'll find the required bits.
