You can start a bulleted list by typing "* my bullet item" followed by
Enter.

Alternatively, you can simply use Alt+(right arrow).  This will create a
bullet, and place any text on the line after the bullet symbol.  You can
increase/decrease bullet indent level with alt+(right/left arrow).

Does this solve your problems?  If not, please file enhancement bugs in
bugzilla.
