Yes, there were various reasons we opted for notebooks instead of tags
in the UI. In using the tagging, we found it wasn't all that useful.
You can already get instant search results across all your notes, so
tagging wasn't too helpful in that regard. The tagging UI itself
seemed pretty cumbersome. After talking to users about how they hoped
to use the feature, we realized that what most people were saying was
that they wanted a way to categorize notes. So we tried the notebook
UI, and people seemed to find it more useful.
Personally, I don't use notebooks and I have no interest in tags (from
a UI perspective, at least). As notebooks are built on Tomboy's
tagging infrastructure, the only work necessary would be exposing tags
in the UI. If other folks are interested in adding tagging to
Tomboy's UI, they are more than welcome to revive the old UI code and
ship it as a little add-in.
