I saw this and was very impressed, Mario. It seems like a really slick 
approach!  Because of where we are in the cycle, I've put off looking at 
this patch until after 0.14.0 is released.

If anybody else wants to try out Mario's patch and leave feedback on the 
bug, that would be helpful! :-)
