What version of Ubuntu are you running? We have a couple of PPAs
(repositories) which contain updated versions of Tomboy for Ubuntu.

https://launchpad.net/~tomboy-packagers/+archive/stable contains 1.4.2
and https://launchpad.net/~tomboy-packagers/+archive/development
contains 1.5.2.
