OK, got it. I don't think that it's a Unity bug, though, I think it is
just a problem with my configuration -- my hard drive failed and I ran a
rescue livecd, perhaps a file got corrupted somewhere. Since so many
people use Unity and I haven't encountered anyone with this problem so
far, I think it only affects my computer.

Anyway, I am now using Gnome Shell and I have found that I like it
better than Unity, so I'll keep it. Tomboy from git now runs fine,
without any problems. Thanks a lot for all of your help and know-how!
